Health & Fitness Update #1

What do we have here? Another new feature on my blog? I know I said in the New Year that I would be trying to incorporate some more pieces of my life into my blog and so far I'm really happy with it! I hope you guys don't mind the change and are enjoying my new posts too :)

I've been trying to go on a bit of a fitness kick lately, not so much a massive diet and exercise binge but more of a gradual lifestyle change in general. I've been wanting to do this for a while after many failed attempts but the allure of Springtime and crop tops is pushing my forward. I'm going to try and stay as honest as possible when it comes to the exercise I manage to do and the food I eat, so if you spot a McDonalds on here once or twice you have been forewarned!

After that super long intro, let's just get onto the update.

To me, going back to college after the half-term break seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to indulge in some healthy eating. My college hours mean that I'm eating lunch at college twice a week, 'dinner' once a week and breakfast twice a week as I get up super early to get the bus. I used to be guilty of getting chips on two of those three days, a habit which I've now kicked completely.

My college lunches & snacks this week:

Monday:
Wholegrain pitta bread with roasted turkey breast chunks, with a few pieces of dark chocolate and a small stack of pretzels and a side of grapes. I had a bottle of water as a drink.

Tuesday:
Wholegrain pasta with sweet corn and broccoli, a Belvita breakfast bar (the chocolate and nuts one) and a bottle of orange juice for my drink.

Thursday:
Wholegrain pasta with sweet corn with a bottle of water and a small stack of crackers with cheese chunks.

As you can see from what I had, I've been replacing white bread and pasta with their wholegrain options. I honestly prefer brown bread to white anyway, but wholegrain pasta was a new experience for me and I can honestly say I'm converted. My boyfriend now calls me a pasta snob because I will only eat wholegrain pasta! It's much better for you as it contains more fibre and nutrients that the regular white pasta. The same goes for bread and I didn't realise how much sugar goes into regular white bread! It's insane. I still have a few treats packed such as pretzels and dark chocolate but only if I finish my fruit first (haha) as I find that if I crave chocolate at college, the prices are so expensive that I end up losing money and eating more of it than intended. If I pack myself a small amount, I can control the amount I'm eating whilst satisfying the craving.

Exercise-wise, I've subscribed to the Blogilates Youtube Channel which is amazing, scoured Pinterest for inspiration and routine ideas and downloaded some of my old Zumba songs and have been doing a few old routines I can remember from my classes last summer. I have also been taking part (kind of) in the 30-day Plank, which is basically where you do the plank movement daily but up your time by ten seconds each day. I'm not going to lie, I have been skipping days on this and have been stuck on 60 seconds for a while now but every time I work out I always add in the plank movement at least twice. Jogging is also on my work out list at the moment, as I'm working my way up to being able to run outdoors without becoming a tired mess within minutes.

I hope you guys liked this change of post, it's been a much longer one than I thought but now I've set down the basics I wont have to fill you in on as much next time!

Review: Simple Kind To Eyes Eye Make Up Remover

For some reason, the one skincare product I have a love-hate relationship with is eye make-up remover. I've trialled many but they're just never up to scratch - they're always too oily, too drying, too sticky. And sadly, this is no exception. I'd had high hopes for my first Simple skincare product - they're well known for their suitability for sensitive skins and their natural-inspired ingredients list. And that part of this product is perfect - it doesn't irritate or sting my eyes and the fragrance-free, vitamin-enriched liquid doesn't dry out my skin at all. This is also a non-oil formula so it doesn't leave me greasy and is even good for use on waterproof make-up. However, it's the consistency that lets it down. I just find it far too sticky whilst in use and afterwards. My lashes become stuck together and my skin tacky to touch. It has a very smooth and very liquid consistency and yet it just doesn't glide over the skin very well. It does it's job as an eye make-up remover and it's bargain price is good but it just doesn't cut it as my product of choice when going through my skincare routine. This product retails for £3.25 from Boots for a 125ml bottle or if you opt for the tester size like I did it's priced at around £1.50.

NEW IN: Dream Guide & Aroma Sleep Aids

Stress and sleep don't often go hand-in-hand in my life. If I'm feeling particularly nervous about something (an upcoming exam, meeting new people, ect) then I'll often find myself experiencing some pretty crazy dreams and a disjointed sleep pattern. In order to battle this pressing issue, I picked up a few aromatherapy sleep aids from Avon. I'm the sort of person who doesn't believe in medication of any kind and so I'd prefer to tackle my issues with a few home remedies rather than have to pop a pill and whilst flicking through the brochure a few weeks ago I came across these two items: the Pillow Mist and the Balm. Laced with the soothing scents of chamomile and lavender (both known relaxants), I'm keeping my fingers crossed with these two products. Paired with a calming bubble bath and a comfy pair of PJ's, hopefully the two will help with my insistent lack of sleep. The Pillow Mist retails for £4.50 and the Balm for £3, but they're regularly on sale so keep your eye out. Also, due to the crazy dreams, I picked up this A - Z Of Dreaming book in Asda. I know these things are sometimes a hoax - and after reading through some of the explanations, they're completely random - but I have had quite a few dreams that, once looked up in the guide, have made more sense to me. This book also features a 'Dream Diary' section at the back with pre-questioned columns to fill out to help you decipher your dreams. This was £3.

Do any of you guys suffer with sleepless nights? What are your favourite remedies?

My Week #5

Photo Captions: Primark & Lush Haul // Pink bath using Lush's Candy Mountain Bubble Bar // My Valentines gift // Healthy Breakfast! Fruit Salad & Cranberry Juice // OOTD // Starbucks Vanilla Frappuchino

Product of the week: The product I've been really loving this week is the Lush Karma Solid Perfume. It's such a zingy, citrus scent that clings to my skin literally all day and puts me in such a good mood.

Purchases this week: Recent purchases can be seen in the above photo! I went to Primark with my boyfriend and picked up some fitness gear plus a pair of leather leggings and a pair of fur lined socks. From Lush I bought the Butterball bath bomb and the Karma solid perfume and The Fault In Our Stars arrived in the post that day so I included that as well.

Watched this week: If you follow me on twitter you will know that I have been so desperate to watch Lord Of The Rings but I can't find any of my DVDs so I'm on a massive downer about it. I haven't actually been to the cinema for a while as I've been so busy at college that by the time I leave I'm just too tired. I've mostly been reading this week, compared to watching movies and am currently reading (to satisfy my LOTR cravings) The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkein.

Highlight of the week: I had a lovely client on Monday for a full body massage, which also got me signed off completely for my massage unit in college. I also picked up two other Distinctions (the highest grade) in my Promoting and Client Care assessments. Yay!

Bedroom Updates: Jewellery & Perfume Storage!

It's been a long time coming with many hours spent on Pinterest and a jewellery storage inspiration post here on my blog but I've finally took a step towards sorting out the storage for my bedroom. I wanted something that was pretty as well as practical, but also displayed my jewellery in such a way that I'd remember to wear it. In these two storage devices I have only a few pieces but they're certainly my favourites. My other pieces that require a home are more statement things such as chunky bracelets, collars and chains that couldn't fit in with the things I have now on display.

Let's start with my favourite: the photo frame (bought from The Range). I got this heart shaped photo frame for my birthday years ago, but as the little heart clips didn't meet together properly the photos just kept falling out and so I'd pushed it aside until I discovered it again earlier. The gaps between the clips are perfect for arranging chains inside without risk of them becoming caught or damaged and also make cute little hangers for earrings. Stored on here I have two necklaces, two pairs of earrings, a bracelet and a ring. I hang this on my wall next to my full-length mirror.

  Arrow Bracelet - Topshop
Bow Ring - Charity Shop
Gold Chain Earrings - Charity Shop
Chevron Feather Earrings - Primark
Eiffel Tower Necklace - Avon
Deathly Hallows Necklace - eBay
Secondly I have an adorable little breakfast tray that my mum bought me. I keep this on top of a chest of drawers in front of my books but it's in a patch of bad lighting so I just placed it on my bed to be photographed. The colours are a bit all over the place but I like that thrown together, eclectic feel. On the left hand side of the tray I have my cute little mint green and gold polka dot tea cup and saucer, where I store my River Island midi rings and my pearl bracelet. I don't wear a lot of rings as my fingers are so tiny it's hard to find any that fit me and my Crown Ring I keep stored by my bed in it's little case so I don't have much in here. On the right hand side of the tray I have a small variety of perfumes - Taylor Swift's Wonderstruck Enchanted, a mini Nina Ricci Nina and my boyfriend's Black Suede. I also have a chunk of natural Amethyst placed next to it for decoration.

I still have a long way to go with my bedroom but it's just finding the time (and the money) to do everything properly! I hope you like what I've done so far, let me know what you think!

Review: Rimmel Kate Moss 101 Lipstick

I'm pretty sure there's not a girl alive who isn't somewhat familiar with the good old Kate Moss 107 lipstick. But I don't often hear enough about the other shades from the collection, which lead me to investigate in my local boots and emerge bearing the beautiful shade 101.

My tastes in lipsticks change very frequently depending on my mood or outfit choice for the day, but I have noticed my favouring of a pretty, dusty pink shade. Up until recently it had been Rimmel's Oxford St Fuchsia but after discovering this beauty it's been well and truly pushed aside.

The 101 lipstick is a matte-yet-glossy lipstick that sits beautifully upon the lips. The formula is so moisturising despite it's matte finish that I'm amazed and the scent, oh, the scent is a deliciously fruity kind of smell. I think it's very important for lip products to smell nice because they are so close to your nose that they're often unpleasant to wear otherwise. Anyway, the colour. It's somewhat similar to the MUA Matte Effect in Pouty Pink - a pretty, girly, bubble gum pink that's not too dark and not too light but this one contains more pigment and is much more flattering, I feel. It's wear time is impressive and maintains strength through eating and drinking.

Overall I'm really impressed with this lipstick. Whilst I'm not sure it will ever gain such a credibility as the infamous 107, I'm sharing this find with whoever will listen. This lipstick retails for £5.49 from Boots but is currently on offer for £3.99!

Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Following my complete and utter infatuation with The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, I was on the look out for another emotional teenage book that would make me cry (no joke, I'm a masochist). Upon this description into Google, I came across The Fault In Our Stars: a novel based around two cancer survivors who fall in love. That's to put it simply.

Now this isn't going to be a negative review, of such, but I can't say that I'm completely in love with this book. Maybe I had bigger expectations or maybe my love of Perks makes it impossible to really love anything else, but I was left wanting a little more. I'm sorry if that makes people angry because I know how widely adored it is, but it just wasn't for me.

The story is narrated by a sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she meets and falls in love with seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters, an ex-basketball player and amputee. The characters are very easily to like due to their witty humour and sarcasm, although I do believe that Augustus's play on Hazel was a little too forward for my tastes. I'm the sort of girl who enjoys delayed romance and although it takes a while for Hazel to fall completely for his attempts to win her over, I found him a little too insistent.

That aside, I really do like the romantic and dramatic story line that centres around these two. After a couple of chapters I really began to root for them. Hazel's frank and honest observations of live and death and illness are refreshing and leave you thinking a long time after you stop reading. This is the sort of real-life drama that pulls you in, whether you've had an encounter of any kind with Cancer or not. The descriptions are beautifully written and the plot easy to follow and yes, just like TPOBAW the ending is horrifically sad.

I just wasn't completely blown away by it. There were moments in the book that I'm sure were supposed to matter to me but I just didn't feel that way. Even at the ending, although I was very sad by it and did tear up a little, it was nothing compared to the way I felt after Perks. Once again, maybe I'm just comparing the two too much but I just don't feel it was as in depth as it could be, drama-wise. The side storyline, whilst cute, just wasn't powerful enough for me.

The film version of this book is due to be released into cinemas some point in the summer time (Youtube Trailer) which I will most definitely be going to watch and looks really adorable. I got my copy of this book from Play.com for £6 but I'm sure nearer to the film's release you'll be able to find it in most supermarkets.

Current Go-To Nail Shades

Spring is approaching! And as distant as that may seem due to the impending weather difficulties in the UK, I am holding on to the hope that it's still on it's way. Obviously due to the previous point, the weather has put my spring clothing on hold so I have been embracing the pretty shades and textures and patterns in such a way that doesn't look too bad paired with my coat and scarf of choice: nail shades.

Here I have a mix of textures and colours, all my current go-to polishes (for the days that I'm allowed to wear nail varnish - college rules). Sorry about the dodgy quality of the photo - I had to take this snap within the two minutes the sun managed to break through the dark clouds and so I just went with the best shot I was able to capture! Coloured polishes pictured above are: Revlon's Cupid (the pink), Revlon's Cloud (the pale purple), Revlon's Blue Lagoon (the shimmery blue) and Barry M's Mint Green (the mint green.. obviously). And the three textures are: Sally Hansen's Sugar Coat, Avon's Opal Top Coat and Rimmel's Matte Top Coat.
Textures:

Following the overwhelming but now out-dated success of the 'Crackle' nail varnish, I find it difficult to find unique nail varnish finishes that aren't a little tacky. I may or may not have previously mentioned the Rimmel Matte Finish Pro, but I'll be surprised if I haven't as I adore it. It literally changes any nail varnish into a matte one, whether it's a glitter or a regular polish. The Sally Hansen Sugar Coat is a new find of mine, which leaves my nails textured with a gritty, sand like finish. It's a little scratchy but gives full coverage in one coat and is a bright, clean white. Finally I have my last little grasp on Christmas - a glitter top coat. This one is a bit more subtle and features flecks of shimmery pale glitter, meaning it's great for the pastel spring trends.

Colours:

As you may have seen in my OOTD birthday post, I absolutely adore Revlon's Cupid: a bright bubblegum pink that gives full coverage in just one coat and lasts for ages. It's probably my most worn colour from this collection, as it always catches my eye if I'm a bit unsure of what to wear. My other two Revlon picks are Cloud and Blue Lagoon. Cloud is one of those shades that has a hint of so many colours that I don't know what to call it - a grey-ish lilac-y blue? It's super flattering despite it's split personalities, colour wise, and despite it's paleness, it only requires two coats to give intense colour. Blue Lagoon is a pretty pale blue laced with a subtle silver sparkle that works really well with my silver crown ring as it sets off the shimmer. Finally Barry M's Mint Green is my green of choice, but it's quite wishy-washy so I sometimes apply a white polish as a base to get maximum colour.

Again I apologise for the poor quality of these photos - hopefully the weather will lighten up a bit soon! I hope you all had a good week.

Review: Lush Big Blue Bath Bomb

Please excuse the smudges of lipstick samples on the back of my hand haha
Lush says: "This calming and nourishing bath bomb evokes a summer’s day at the seaside: perfect for drifting off. Your cares are soaked away with this bath bomb filled with relaxing and nutritious ingredients that bring to mind the Mediterranean: citrus groves, lavender, and a hint of seaweed."

This bath bomb wasn't purchased by choice (my boyfriend chose it) and that was purely because of my mis-conceptions about the sea salt and sea weed thing. My Seanik shampoo bar isn't very hydrating and I know for a fact that salt is very drying on skin so I expected to emerge from the water with tight, dehydrated skin but this was not the case.

But let's go back to the beginning. This bath bomb is one of the larger lush ones, maybe the same size as the Dragon's Egg and isn't very stand-out-ish, appearance wise: it boasts a simple, dark blue colour with a patch of white which reminds me of clouds in the sky. The scent isn't something that I would choose - or really describe either - but according to Lush it has hints of lavender, which was very relaxing.

Once dropped into the bath, a big puff of sky blue colour exploded and changed the tone of the water immediately. I also noticed the little strands of sea weed coming out - which, in my opinion, there are far too many of! But due to these little strands, the bath water was so soft and this softness remained on my skin long afterward. The sea salt is supposed to be mildly exfoliating which I didn't really notice, but hey, how could I tell?

Overall I quite like this bath bomb but I can't say I'm rushing out to buy it again. I just have too many other favourites! The only set back I have with this is the amount of sea weed - there honestly is loads of the stuff packed in there. This bath bomb retails at Lush stores for £3.25.

My Lipsmacker Lip Balm Collection (& Review!)

Move over Baby Lips.

Today I'm going to share with you one of my favourite Christmas presents from last year (it sounds so long ago!): my Lip Smacker Lip Balm Tin. Lip balms are definitely my weakness and I have more than I will ever need but I just can't help but buy more. I need help. So I was very very excited to receive the Lip Smackers Coca Cola Tin for Christmas off my boyfriend and proceeded to try them all out over the course of the day. I have been in love with them ever since.

In the cute, retro looking tin (where I now store my bobby pins) I got the Coca Cola, Vanilla Coke, Cherry Coke, Strawberry Fanta, Orange Fanta and Sprite flavours of lip balms. Yes, please note: flavours. These things taste frickin' amazing, exactly like you're drinking the drinks themselves. They are all packed with strong scents that smell exactly like their supposed to: you can almost smell the fizziness. Because of this, I'm sure it will be a love-or-hate thing with some people, but I adore them. The consistency is really nice, not oily or greasy at all and actually sinks into lips rather than sitting on top. I apply a generous coating at bedtime and wake up with the softest, nourished lips. I don't need to apply more in the morning - I just pop my lipstick right on top.

I'm not too crazy on the Orange Fanta one, I admit, simply because the orangey scent is a little too artificial and sweet for me, but the Cherry Coke and Strawberry Fanta are my favourites. These two also carry a light tint that coats your lips with a gentle, rosy gloss. The Sprite and Vanilla Coke also share this trait, but their colour is more of a pale creamy shade which is very unflattering, so these two are best left for bed times. Also in my stash, but not part of this collection, I have the Feast balm, which doesn't necessarily smell like a Feast ice lolly but damn sure tastes like one.

The moisturising qualities that these balms possess are also really great. I apply a generous coating at bedtime and wake up with the softest, nourished lips. I don't need to apply more in the morning - I just pop my lipstick right on top.

Overall, I think these lip balms make the perfect gift for any time of year or occasion and come in a huge variety of shades, scents and flavours. They even have salted caramel and red velvet cupcake. The prices range between £1 - £3 for just one (Primark is the cheapest I've found them, Topshop the most expensive) and the collections vary between £8 - £15. They're also very easy to get a hold of: Primark, Topshop, Sainsburys, Claires and Amazon.co.uk are places I've picked these up from before.

What I Wore: My Birthday Meal

Leather Jacket - Primark
Top - charity shop (tag says Dorothy Perkins)
Jeans - Primark
Shoes - Primark
Necklace - Primark
Nail Varnish - Revlon's Cupid

Happy birthday to me! I am now officially 19 and decided to mark the occasion yesterday by going out for a casual meal with my family. A photo diary of the meal itself is currently being edited together, but for now I'll just talk to you about what I wore.

The place we went was a simple pub-turned-restaurant which was child-friendly (very important, as my sister is 6!) and had a lovely, chilled atmosphere. I didn't want to wear anything too dressy - my brother couldn't be talked out of his 'Sunday' joggers - so went for the option of jeans and a white top, with a little twist.

It's not often I walk out of the house almost head-to-toe in Primark, but I love it when I do! This is probably one of my most budget outfits, but I don't feel like it looks like that. My lace top is an old charity shop find, although the tag says Dorothy Perkins. It has the prettiest cut-out lace design all over and has buttons running all up the back. Paired with this I threw on my black leather jacket (let's just ignore the super-long sleeves) and trusty Primark jeans to add a touch of casualness, as I felt the top would have looked too dressy with a skirt. Accessories-wise, I wore my multi-chain necklace and my new crown ring, paired with Revlon's Cupid nail polish.

Overall, I'm very happy with what I wore. I was super comfortable and didn't feel over dressed at all, despite the fact I wore a necklace, which is something unheard of from me!

My Week #4

Photo Captions: quote of the week // testing out new skincare // sisterly manicures // sharing is caring! // sweet potato jackets with chicken breast and sweet corn // book of the moment // 'spa' bath with my sister: marshmallow candle and Christmas snowman bath bomb // on towel duty at college // my favourite, most gorgeous birthday present from my boyfriend

A bit of a change from the normal lay-out of this post, but I thought I'd have a bit of a ramble at you guys rather than listing my favourites and what I've been watching because to be honest, it's been such a crazy week I haven't had much time to do much of anything!

one. I'd like to announce: it's my birthday tomorrow! I'm officially going to be 19 which is actually a little terrifying but it's given me a bit of a reality check about all that I've achieved since this time last year and I feel like I'm allowed to have a bit of a calm down instead of rushing through everything all the time.

two. Although see the quote pictured: 'remember why you started'. I've been hitting a bit of a mental block lately with blogging and creative writing, mostly because there's always that little doubt in my mind about the quality of what I do and all manner of other self-conscious things. I've had this quote as the background of my iPhone to remind me to remember the reasons I love all of these things.

three. Another birthday related thing, I'd just like to take the moment to have a complete fan girl about the beautiful ring my boyfriend bought me. It's a handmade tiny little silver crown. He had to have it specially made for me as I have the thinnest fingers known to man, but isn't it beautiful. It's not often I post really personal things onto my blog, but I just couldn't not share this! I should be uploading a photo diary about my birthday as we're going out for a meal this evening with my family so a better photo of it will be included in that!

four. I've brought no beauty related things home this week, although I have added a few new books into my Play.com basket: The Mortal Instruments and The Fault In Our Stars. I have also finally moved onto the third and final book in the Infernal Devices series: Clockwork Princess. I'm enjoying this one a lot more than I enjoyed Clockwork Prince despite the fact I'm only a hundred or so pages in.

I hope you all had a lovely week!

Testing, Testing: Skincare

I've always been afraid of mixing things up with my skincare routine: I fear tight, dry skin and angry, itchy red patches due to my skin's sensitivity. But I have tried to put a stop to such things over the past few weeks and have made some happy changes. I've introduced a new, thicker winter moisturiser and a super gentle exfoliant and have stepped things up a gear in the form of Christmas gifts: the Loreal Skin Perfection Water, the Clean & Clear Deep Cleansing Lotion and the Simple Eye Make-up Remover.

I'm yet to form rounded opinions on these three things, but I thought I'd give you guys an insight into what I've been testing over the past few weeks. I'm loving the L'oreal Water and have been using it for removing make-up and eye make-up before cleansing, or if I'm running late, I use this as a quick cleanser in itself. The Simple Eye-Make Up Remover has only had one use so far and although I find it a little sticky, it does it's job. As for the Clean & Clear option, I'm yet to delve into it just yet. The words 'deep cleansing' do make me a little nervous and I've been waiting for my social calendar to clear up a little, pending a reaction.

But as I say, I shall write up a post when I've made up my mind on these things, as well as an updated Skincare Routine soon!

The £1 Tangle Teezer Dupe?!

On the budget of a college student, it's difficult for me to always try out new things as I'm worried that I wont love them, meaning I'm always reluctant to part with my pennies. I adore budget brands such as Nivea and MUA and Rimmel because, despite their tinsy price tags, I know their products work and that I like them. I don't own a lot of 'expensive' nail varnishes such as Dior or even something as 'low priced' as Essie, because I know that Barry M and Rimmel offer such amazing polishes as a fraction of the price. For this reason, I have put off the progressing mania of the Tangle Teezer: what appears to me to just be an overpriced hair brush.

Now I'm sure you've read the reviews (I know I have!) and that the Tangle Teezer is good for what it is, but naturally I spent my time (and tiny amounts of money) testing out a comparison. Such to my surprise, I found it in Poundland.

The Tangle Teezer 'dupe' named the Tangle Attack was sitting below a bunch of unwanted shampoos and conditioners on my recent trip to Poundland and their obviously duplicated shape drew me in, as well as the bright colours. Naturally, I picked one up and proceeded to use it as soon as I got home.

I can't compare to you the difference between this dupe and the real Tangle Teezer, but I can give you my thoughts on this which you can compare to the circulating reviews of the original, so I hope this will be helpful in some way.

Lets start off with the basics: this Tangle Attack is made from simple plastic and is filled with air, where-as the original is solid through-out. It's not neccesarily a sturdy design (as my dog chewed up my last one) but it's hardy enough to not bend when in use. The bristles are a mix between short and long, much like the original, but these are a little scratchy on my scalp. The bristles do the job, no doubt, and don't leave my hair with any static at all but I tend to reserve it for the ends of my hair rather than using it all over.

Overall, I think this is a pretty good dupe for the legendary Tangle Teezer, but I can't imagine it will lessen it's reign any less. It's certainly stopped me from going out and buying the real thing, though!
